College dean and home economics educator. Catharine MacKay was Dean of the Iowa State College Home Economics Division, 1914-1921. She began at Iowa State in 1910 as an associate professor. MacKay received a degree in domestic science from the Drexel Institute in Philadelphia in 1907. She later studied at Teachers College and Mrs. Farmer's School of Cooking in Boston. Iowa State University first established coursework in "domestic economy" in 1872. The first instructor was Mary B. Welch, wife of University President, Adonijah Welch. In 1875 the Department of Domestic Economy was formed. It was among the earliest domestic economy departments in the United States.
